A CONVERSATION WITH CLINT ROMESHA
CLINT ROMESHA | COURAGE, LEADERSHIP, AND SACRIFICE: STORIES OF VALOR
Clint Romesha awoke at 6 AM to the sound of gunfire.
He bolted out of bed, and immediately knew they were under attack.
Clint had been stationed in Afghanistan with his group of men for 3 months now. Their base was at the bottom of a valley, surrounded by hills. It was not a good spot, and everyone knew it.
The enemy had realized this, and were now pushing in from all sides, trying to wipe them out. Within an hour, some of the enemy was inside the camp.
“My own safety didn’t even cross my mind,” he later recalled, “all that mattered to me was that nobody was left behind.”
Clint and another soldier started trying to sneak around the enemy, but someone noticed them and fired an RPG that blew up a nearby generator, blowing both Clint and the other soldier off their feet.
After regaining their feet, the soldier pointed out the bloody hole in Clint’s arm.
“I can still walk and shoot—I’m good.” Was Clint’s reply.
Clint then asked for volunteers to help him try to save the others, and 5 guys agreed. They fought their way out, and managed to recapture ammo supplies. The continued to hold off the enemy, while some of them went out to rescue some of the wounded. They managed to call in a bomber plane, which helped to hold off the enemy until more help arrived.
After many hours, the battle was over. Clint later would return to the US and was a recipient of the Medal of Honor for his bravery and valor.
