A CONVERSATION WITH
DANNY SPRINKLE

OFF THE COURT WITH DANNY SPRINKLE

“To be great, you have to be yourself.”

In my conversation with Danny Sprinkle, former head basketball coach at Utah State University, he shared these words of wisdom.

After a great basketball career, Danny knew he wanted to get into coaching, and worked under 2 very incredible (and very different) coaches. He learned a lot from each of them, including discipline, creativity, and an eye for detail. But when I asked him what it takes to be a good coach, he told me the biggest thing is you have to be yourself. Period.

Sometimes when we’re around incredible leaders, we make the mistake of trying to become them verses learning from them. It can be easy to think “Well if I want to have their success, I have to act the exact same way they would.” And while that might work, it is incredibly hard to stay consistent at. This allows you to achieve the success they had, while still maintaining the inner peace of being true to yourself. Plus, everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, and you need to cater your own journey and style to what feels right for you.

I thought this was a powerful insight.

MY 5 INSIGHTS ON COACHING FROM DANNY:

  • You won’t experience the highs until you’ve first gone through the lows.

  • When a team loses, it’s not because the other team beat them. It’s because they beat themselves.

  • Discipline and accountability with EVERYONE creates strong team unity.

  • Loyalty breeds loyalty.

  • Be yourself. Always.

I am super appreciative of Danny and our conversation together, and wish him best of luck at Washington!
