A CONVERSATION WITH DAVE JENSEN
THE VALUE BEHIND HARD WORK AND CONTINUOUS LEARNING WITH DAVE JENSEN
In this age of hacks, online gurus, and a surplus of information, it can be difficult to identify which beliefs and mindsets are actually substantial—and it often takes a long time.
Which is why I’m always super inspired and fascinated with people who obtain valuable mindsets early on in life. Take for example my good friend and business parter Dave Jensen:
Dave grew up loving baseball. He lived and breathed the sport, and got pretty good at it too. However during his junior year of high school, he told me he got a little too cocky and comfortable, and suddenly he stopped playing as well and was even benched for most of his junior year.
This experience, along with talking to some coaches and family helped him realize that he needed to put in a different level of work than he was already. So he straightened up, and put an insane amount of hours into practice.
He then went on to crush it, getting calls from multiple colleges and going on the play pro ball.
That season, Dave developed a deep belief that,
“If you do more than other people, and you prove to yourself that you put in the work, the confidence and results will follow.”
Dave went on the apply that mindset into business, entrepreneurship, and investing. Sandlot Partners would not be what it is today without his grit and work ethic. I’m super grateful to have him as a close friend and mentor.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM DAVE:
On the path to success, fear is mandatory and overcoming it is optional.
On my podcast Dave shared his story about the hard work and struggle it took to get where he is today, and I wanted to highlight 3 key ares where he didn’t let fear stop him:
1) Dave was an extremely talented baseball player, and while playing for BYU he had multiple offers to play pro ball, but decided to serve an LDS mission instead. When he got back, he struggled to play as well as he had before—but instead of throwing in the towel, he kept at it. Eventually he got to play pro ball, and just crushed it.
2) After baseball, Dave went back to school for business and eventually got a job at Portfolio Advisors working for Brian Murphey. It was intense and uncertain, but just as before Dave decided to go all-in and trust himself. 10 years later he was doing so well he decided he needed to get out of his comfort zone and try something else.
3) During covid, Dave saw an opportunity to invest in Breeze Airways, and decided to try and obtain it. Even though there was a lot of uncertainty and problems he had never run into before, he took what he had learned previously and continued to work, trusting it would work out eventually. His project was the early seeds to what later became Sandlot Partners.
“Dave is an incredible example of putting his head down and trusting in the process. We all feel fear—the question is what will you do next?”
