DILJEET TAYLOR'S JOURNEY OF INSPIRATION AND LEADERSHIP

Imagine putting your whole heart and career into something and then your teammate wins massive success instead of you. How would you feel?

I had a great conversation about this with Diljeet Taylor, head coach of women’s cross country at BYU, who is nationally renowned for her coaching skills.

She talked to me about how it often feels difficult and unnatural to watch someone close to you succeed while you don’t. Many times she meets with her athletes about this very thing. How do you genuinely cheer for your teammate winning the gold, while you’re sitting on the sideline?

A few things can help with this, such as focusing on gratitude and serving others rather than serving yourself. It a world of competition it can be difficult to not compare yourself, but it’s a crucial skill to grow. And you do it by constantly remembering that the race is against who you were yesterday. It’s you vs you.

This skill is critical for sports, business, marriage, and a host of other life experiences that we have. And it’s well worth it. In Diljeet’s words,

“If you can see other people’s success and genuinely be happy for them, people will see that and respect you. They will even begin to view you as a great leader, because they trust you.”

I love this. This is the abundance mindset - rejoicing for the success of others just as much as you rejoice for your own success.

MY TAKEAWAYS ON COACHING FROM DILJEET:

  • It’s good to be proud of what you and your team has accomplished. But it’s even more important to be proud of who you’ve become along the way to success.

  • Showing up everyday with a smile and good energy will open doors you never could have dreamed of.

  • Charting your own course in life and going against the crowd. It takes 51% bravery and 49% crazy.

  • When you compete, think about the little boy or girl you once were with these big dreams. Do it for him/her.

There is so much to learn from this incredible woman. Not only is she a great example to her athletes at BYU, but she is also an example to everyone striving to reach their dreams in every area of life.
