COACHING WITH HEART AND PURPOSE WITH KALANI SITAKE

When Kalani Sitake was 6 years old, his parents divorced.

This event dramatically changed his young life. Suddenly, he found himself moving between different relatives in various states, without any of his siblings around.

Even at such a young age, Kalani deeply felt the pain of this upheaval. In his words:

“I just felt like a broken young man. I had no friends, I ate alone at school, and I just felt lost.”

Eventually, Kalani’s father resumed raising the kids, and Kalani moved back to Utah. By then, he was a shy, introverted 9-year-old—but he had one massive passion: BYU Football.

One day, Kalani’s school invited some BYU football players to speak. He was ecstatic and brought along some souvenirs to get signed. During recess, while the players were playing with the kids, Kalani sat on the sidelines by the school, simply enjoying watching his heroes.

Suddenly, one of the players noticed Kalani and waved him over. Kalani, too nervous and shy, shook his head. The player waved again, but he still didn’t move. Finally, the player walked over, sat down next to him, and started asking him questions about himself.

In Kalani’s words:

“I couldn’t believe he was talking to me. Eventually, he told me to stand up, so I stood up. He gave me a hug and then said, ‘Everything’s going to be fine.”

“I had heard those words probably a thousand times before, but this was the first time I truly believed them. From that moment, I felt fixed. I knew I was going to play football for BYU. I knew I was going to try to make people happy, and I knew that God loved me.

“I think nowadays we get so caught up looking at screens that we can miss opportunities to change someone’s life.”

All of this came to him because of one act of kindness.

I want to express my sincere gratitude for Kalani and all the good he has done since that moment. His leadership and example as the head coach for BYU football over the past few years have impacted so many people.
