NAVIGATING THE BALANCING ACT OF LIFE WITH KRISTIN ANDRUS

Kristin Andrus told me about the day she finally snapped and confronted her husband, Jeremy about his work.

She had been feeling stuck with the sometimes monotonous and tiring nature of being a stay at home mom, and was feeling slightly resentful that her husband was getting to work at the exciting startup SkullCandy. So she confronted him about it.

She told me that Jeremy calmly responded that if she wanted him to be home more, he would be happy to be a librarian and work a normal 9-5. But if she wanted him to be an entrepreneur, she needed to let him work. Either way, he said they needed to be united in their path forward.

Kristen told me that during that conversation, she realized that she had been blaming her husband for her feelings of unfulfillment. Instead of making him fix it, she needed to stop putting herself in a box and go create fulfillment in her own life, in her own unique way.

What came next is an incredible journey of giving, philanthropy, and working with Utah government legislature to pass laws to help protect mothers and children from domestic violence.

Even with her six kids, Kristin is a force of nature and has been able to create tremendous value in the lives of so many people.

What I admire most about Kristin and Jeremy’s marriage is their interdependency. Steven Covey in the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, talks about how we progress as humans from dependency, to independency, to interdependency where each individual is independent, but they choose to work together to achieve a common goal.

“Kristin’s choice to build interdependence with her husband has allowed them both to accomplish incredible things in the lives of so many people, while still being amazing parents to their children.
