A CONVERSATION ABOUT NAVIGATING FEAR
NAVIGATING FEAR | A ROADMAP TO PERSONAL TRIUMPH
“Difficulties are required—but failure is optional.”
4 quotes about fear that live in my head rent-free:
-
“Everything you want is on the other side of fear.” - Jack Canfield
-
“He who has overcome his fears will truly be free.” - Aristotle
-
“Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” - Nelson Mandela
-
“Do one thing everyday that scares you.” - Eleanor Roosevelt
These quotes light me up, and I often turn to them in times of fear and anxiety. We all have moments of fear in our lives, the question is what will you do when it arrives? The answer to that question is what defines you.
Here is my personal process for how I beat fear in my own life:
-
Recognize and acknowledge it. Say to myself, “I am experiencing fear.” Oftentimes we try and resist fear or act like it doesn’t exist, but this can just makes it worse. Embracing it and remembering that pressure is a privilege allows you to then tackle it head-on.
-
Dig into the origin of the fear. What is it that I am really afraid of? And then I ask, if this plays out, what is the worse that could happen? Usually these answers alone destroy the base of the fear all by themselves.
-
Prepare. The scriptures say “If ye are prepared ye shall not fear.” When I visualize my goals, and put together a plan in advance, and then show up with the best mindset and conviction I can muster, then I will not be shaken when fear strikes. I know I’ve done everything I can.
-
Take massive action. Move forward. Motion creates emotion. Cross the chasm. Doing the thing you fear most will be the death of fear itself. No half-hearted effort - just dive in.
-
Reflect and celebrate my wins. I love to remember previous times when I was afraid but still succeeded. We often don’t take enough time to celebrate our wins, however small. So make sure you recognize them and let that build confidence within you.
We all experience fear at different moments in our life, and it seems to come most often when we are in pursuit of a worthy goal or trying to level up and grow. I hope these steps will help you as they continue to help me.
