A CONVERSATION WITH STEVE YOUNG
THE LAW OF LOVE WITH NFL HALL OF FAMER STEVE YOUNG
Steve Young stood on the football field, watching a 6’8 350 lb defensive player rushing towards him, yelling his lungs out.
Before Steve could get away, Reggie White tackled him to the ground, wrapping his massive arms around him so he couldn’t move.
During this moment, in the intensity of an NFL football game, Reggie could’ve said anything to Steve. He couldn’t laughed at him, cussed him out or anything. But instead Reggie said:
“Steve! How are you doing?”
The question surprised Steve, who was still caught up in the intensity of the moment. Fast-forward to a few plays later, and Reggie tackled him again, but this time he asked how Steve’s kids were doing.
Steve shared this story with us at the MW3 conference. He then followed up by talking about how incredible it was that during one of the most stressful and adrenaline-filled moments someone could be in, Reggie still had the ability to recognize Steve as a friend, while still playing as rough and competitively as an athlete needs to.
“Sometimes in life, we get caught up in the intensity of work, or driving, or relationships, and we forget in that moment to love and respect the humans around us.
”
Steve talked about his book The Law of Love, where he shares his own personal journey of trying to show love to others, no matter whats happening in the moment. While it isn’t easy, he is always surprised at how much love he feels in return—and that he is always working to keep himself in a spirit of love.
I’m extremely grateful for Steve for coming to speak at our conference. His message is one I believe all of us need to hear, especially in today’s divided society.
