A CONVERSATION WITH VESS PEARSON
RESILIENCE IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP | VESS PEARSON'S JOURNEY TO SUCCESS
The formula to success is simple:
“Find someone you admire and copy them. If they can do it, you can do it.”
These wise words were given to me by my friend Vess Pearson, CEO of Aptive Environmental. “It’s like driving somewhere and following someone. If you know which turns to take, then you just have to focus on executing those turns. And if you do it right you can have the confidence that you will make it to your desired destination.”
Vess grew up in a financially modest household, and it was his dad who taught him to emulate the people he admired and to follow in their footsteps. Vess did so, and has since reaped incredible successes in business, church, and family life. He is definitely someone I admire and respect, which is why these words of advice are ones I believe everyone needs to hear.
I believe all the greats copy the examples of the past greats.
MY FAVORITE INSIGHT FROM THIS EPISODE:
I asked Vess what his biggest “I am” is. How does he identify with himself personally?
His answer was simple: “Striving.”
Even after having growing an incredible business, a loving family, and doing much for his community and church, Vess sitll sees himself as someone who is simply trying to grow and improve everyday. In his words he added, “If you’ve ‘made it’, then what’s the point of getting up everyday? What will light you up then?”
It can be easy to get caught up in the idea of “making it big” in the business world. But what then? Will you really be happy? I think a lot of people would be very wise to take a page out of Vess’s book, and focus on simply “striving”.
Rather than waiting to be happy until you summit the mountain, how much better will your life be if you just get used to enjoying the climb.
